  1. well to me, in simple terms, it's the act of something in flight.
  2. 1. the design, development, production, operation, and use of aircraft, esp. heavier-than-air aircraft. 2. military aircraft
  3. Aviation is the industry of being able to fly people or cargo or flight in general. There are several aspects to this industry. Aircraft: large, small, special purpose, for which you have sales, service and handling systems. Avionics: aviation electronics and controls. Years ago it wasn't much beyond the basic electrical system and a radio, then to radar on board and more electronics as that industry has advanced to today where you have fly by wire control systems. communictations; aircraft comm systems have advanced as well from the first being a telegraph key to the new data flow systems onboard. navigation: from the original line of sight and flight paths that followed reconizable landmarks to turn and find your way to todays, flying by instruments and bad weather and automated pilots and glide slope for landing to radar and more. Engine technologies have advanced from the old slow piston engines to the quiet jets we now have. Small planes still use the old technology designs with newer technologies making them more reliable, efficient etc. growth??? The aviation world is still growing but it has a lot of challenges ahead. With fuel costs, material costs and regulatory restrictions and saftey problems the industry has almost reached its zenith and may be in for a pull back for the larger airlines. From there the small operators will be fewer and aircraft will become more technologically advanced. Now added to that you have not only the aircraft manufacturers, but the airports and all the handling systems for people and baggage and cargo, you have the engine, and other parts makers, fuel delivery, mechanics and lots more all associated. Planes used to be the only place that data recorders were used to figure out what went wrong in an accident. Did you know that this has spun off into cars and ships and other such so now there is more info available for diagnostics and such. What has never changed over the hundred years of aviation is that it is still fun to get into a very basic aircraft and fly around and be in control. Not too far from the ground and just go. The freedom, the response, the sheer fun of going around, up, down and turning over etc. Nothing beats the feeling. So for all the advances of aviation it's the basic personal craft that still is the most fun to fly.
