Navy Ratings ( Aviation )?

I noticed that a lot of Aviation ratings that i'm interested in have a volunteer for aircrew. Now do you honestly volunteer for aircrew or does the navy just make you aircrew .. is this something that i should have written in my contract if i don't want to be aircrew, but want to be in aviation ratings.

  1. Far as I know, you do not volunteer for aircrew and, in fact, don't have much to say about it. I enlisted to be an Avionics Technician, and they kept trying to assign me to Guam as aircrew. Dunno what the hassle was, but Vietnam was going on and I ended up being assigned to an aircraft carrier for a fighter squadron. Either way, I had no say in it. I don't think you can specify that much fine detail in your contract. Edit: Because it's a dangerous job, I have to sign off that I volunteer? And if I don't, I won't be assigned? What a great way to get out of combat because that's certainly dangerous. In fact, I got hazardous duty pay for having to work on the flight deck of the carrier, and I never signed off on that.
  2. i am marine aircrew. but we go to the same school. because flying is considered a dangerous job you sign orders that say you voulnteer to fly. you can have your orders canceled at any time you want if you no longer feal it is something you are comfortable doing. thats why you receive flight pay also because it is considered a dangerous job. hope that helps. lcpl/usmc kc130 aircrewman
  3. Some aviation ratings will work mostly in the air.... so if you choose one of those, you would be required to do your job. now, allot of ratings work on the flight-deck or air station doing mostly support or maintenance. choose one of those. any thing other than that, you are asked to volunteer. you have to go thru a school for air crew... it isn't something they'll just hit you with outta the blue. but you do get more pay if you are part of the air crew.
