Are aviation degrees meaningful and/or useful?

I am a senior in high school, am looking into the aviation field, and have a few questions... 1. Is there a point to getting an aviation degree from a state college, or should I major in something else? 2. With a BS in aviation, and my licenses, how hard is it to get a job/internship straight out of college? 3. Any idea of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State is better? 4. Do airlines and companies prefer those with aviation specific degrees, or do they just look for any bachelor's degree? Thanks for your time.

  1. My son is a captain/747.. they look for "bush pilots"... education helps but the major issue is what have you flown, where have you flown, how many hours have you flown, how big or small has the craft been that you have flown. I have friends that have sons that can't get work in the airlines even though they have degrees, because they have never done any "rough flying". My other son is an AME.. now he got his job in aviation with a degree.. Aviation specific.. is best, if your going that route. But your probably still going to need plenty of hours flying over the tree tops.. Best of luck to you.
  2. Go to Embry Riddle in either Florida or Arizona. You will make contacts that will last a lifetime.
