- The most important qualification for someone considering a career as a pilot, especially a helicopter pilot, is what you need the most for any job: a good personality. While flying skills can be taught, personality skills like politeness, punctuality and diplomacy cannot. This career is not for everyone. Some people are better off staying away, like those who have a problem with drug or alcohol abuse. There are some medical and physical limitations as well. Since most helicopters are extremely weight sensitive, especially training helicopters, your weight should be proportionate to your height, and generally speaking should not exceed 240 lbs. Although there are some helicopter jobs that are acceptable for bigger individuals, the road to these jobs is generally tougher and more expensive than for smaller people. Diabetics who are insulin dependent are also excluded from this opportunity, as are certain others who have the potential for blackouts and seizures. If you think you have what it takes to fly helicopters, commit yourself fully to your training and you'll be greatly rewarded.
