is there any kind of job of aviation mechanics that only several people in the whole U.S. know how to do?

  1. stealth bomber mechanic.
  2. Scribe line inspections on Boeing aircraft.
  3. Blimp mechanic!
  4. There aren't supposed to be any scribe lines on Boeings. That's why they designed those fancy red plastic scrapers. I'd say wood and fabric assembly and repair are becoming a lost art. Also woven cable splices (less strength than swaged ones and they take forever to make)
  5. yes, how about the SR-71 Blackbird? It's back out of retirement, but there are so few flying, and so there are probably few qualified flight mechanics who actually work on it. Probably count them on the fingers of one hand. There weren't that many to begin with, either. - The Gremlin Guy -
