Joining the Air Force and Failed the Depth Perception Test!!!?
Ok like 99% of most people joining the air force I want to become a pilot one day, unlike most 99% of people I have already started pilot training by taking civilian classes in Aviation weather and Aviation ground school. I took my ASVAB and passed easily, I did the full physical at MEPS and got all 1's, passing perfectly. Ok so I do wear contacts, my vision can be corrected to 20/20, I passed the color blindness test . When I took the depth perception test the person administering it told me to take out my contacts. My vision without my contacts is not 20/20 at all but not too bad. My question is do I need my contacts in and my vision at 20/20 for the depth perception test? I also want to know if there is anyway I can be retested by a licensed optometrist, prefferably at the military's expense. Please help... My lifelong dream is slowly fading away!! More Info: I am just enlisting but I did alot of research before I even talked to a recruiter. I wanted to do a couple jobs like imagery analysis or Air Traffic Control but the MEPS career couseler told me they and others i wanted required depth perception so I settled for other choices. I am in the Delayed Enlistment Program and already swore into the air force.. If I do retest and pass would I be able to change my job selection? IF im already assigned a job would I be able to change that at all?

- Yes, there is, indeed, a provision for going in appeal on the preliminary finding! If yopu have passed all other hurdles and done all other tests successfully, your appeal plea is valid, and you will be retested! good luck!
- Are you enlisting or are you trying for an OTS slot? If you are enlisting then you will have at least a couple of years before you can get an OTS slot as a prior-enlisted officer trainee. During those years you can clear up the vision testing. I don't wear contacts so I don't know if they should have had you take them out. I know many AF pilots who couldn't pass most of the vision tests without either their glasses or contacts. Find out if you can test w/ contacts in. If you are trying for an OTS slot you will have to get it worked out because you are accepted into OTS with your job already selected. Also, even if you do get retested by someone outside the military, the AF is going to require that you pass the AF flight physical. I have a sneaking suspicion that you should have been tested with vision both corrected and uncorrected. Good luck. I don't know if you would be able to change your assigned job. I would guess that you still could. I was never enlisted so I'm not speaking from experience. What I do know is that every job in the AF has at least a few people in it that either wears glasses or contacts. As long as your vision is correctable to 20/20 that should not prevent you from a job. All of this is going to hinge on whether they let you test with contacts or somehow acknowledge that your vision is correctable w/lenses. Be wary of the recruiter steering you towards certain jobs. They may be trying to get you into what they really think suits you but they also may have other motives. Don't be afraid to really pursue what you want out of your service. If you are qualified and have shown aptitude then you should be given your chance.
