Can I choose a specific and perminant day to take off durring coast guard training/coast guard career?

I am a Seventhday Adventist and go to church on Saturday. I'm considering on applying for flight academy in the coast guard. Weather or not I will be able to worship on my religious day will be my deciding factor. Obviously if it's an emergency I would be glad to opt out of church. If I do apply I would already have a BS degree in aviation with CFII rating.

  1. There are VERY few ways to just "walk off the street" and become a Coast Guard Aviator. But for the sake of this question, let's assume you've met the pre-qualifications... Unfortunately, you will not be able to choose your class starting date. You are there for the Coast Guard, not vice versa. Most all training within the military is on a Monday through Friday basis with some exceptions. Coast Guard aviators differ from the rest of the military because by virture of the nautre of their mission they will always get flight hours. This does mean working, (flying), on weekends, and even in the middle of the night, under less than ideal conditions. Depending on your working conditions, chain of command, colleagues, etc; You might be able to have concessions made for you outside of training so that you would be able to attend religious events. But you will be expected, or required, to pick up the slack where you left off. This could mean working extra hours to cover the time you missed. Duty and Country are first. 2. Why are you concern about what day you go to church? Have you ever read the book of Galatians? This is exactly why Paul was admonishing them. Your work of keeping the Sabbath is like filthy rags. Do you really think that filthy rags are going to aid you in keeping the salvation God gave you for free? Consider this: The moment you believe in Christ you are given passage on to a jumbo jet. All you have to do to gain entrance into the cabin is to profess your belief in Christ. This jumbo jet is the only means to get you into heaven. Nothing more is required of you. You do not navigate the way. You do not work to stay on the play. He provides everything. You provide nothing. All you do is patiently wait for the plane to take off. Keeping the Sabbath to keep your salvation is like trying to get out and help fly the plane. Can you really help the plane fly by getting out to push it along? No, of course not. Can you keep the plane flying by something you are doing? Can you hold your hands on the ceiling to keep it up in the air? Will sleeping for 1/7th of the time you are airborne keep the plane in the air? Will abstaining from eating for the duration of the flight aid the pilot? No, none of your "works" will aid the pilot or the plane!! So do you really think you can improve what Christ has already done for you in regard to salvation? Do you really think your deed of keeping the Sabbath can enhance his perfect righteousness. Will washing his perfect righteousness with your filthy rags of Sabbath keeping sustain it or make it better? No. Nothing you can do improves the work of Christ!! If we can do anything to secure our own salvation then there was no purpose for Christ to die on the cross. Gal. 2:21 "For if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"
